When Love and Taxes Collide
By Michael Goergen, Esq.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending upon one’s perspective, a person does not usually obtain a credit report of a perspective mate before they start dating, or even before they fall in love. It is typically not until wedding plans are being made that the now madly in love couple begin to share intimate details about their finances, and how financially responsible each has been is not always equal.
Please join us as we explore a case study which follows the steps taken by a couple to plan for their nuptials under less-than-perfect financial circumstances.
Incorporating elements of family law, estate planning, and bankruptcy protection, we’ll be discussing strategies and steps to take in order to:
• Protect the financially-responsible spouse from considerable tax liabilities
• Protect the less-than-responsible spouse from himself/herself
• Eliminate debt to avoid the threat of tax seizures and liens
